How to Brush Your Teeth if You Have Braces
Whether your children have braces for six months or two years, one thing is certain: It’s crucial that they learn how to brush their teeth with braces. Braces make brushing difficult because food particles and plaque can get stuck to the brackets and teeth. Individuals should brush their teeth after every meal, because it’s very easy for food particles to get stuck in the braces.
Brushing Teeth With Braces
Before you brush your teeth, rinse your mouth with water. This can help loosen any food lodged in and around the braces. When you’re ready to brush, start by brushing the gum line at a 45-degree angle. After brushing the gum line, place the toothbrush on top of the brackets, angling down to brush on top of each bracket. Then, reposition the toothbrush to brush the bottom of the bracket and the wire, angling the toothbrush up. Make sure to go slowly and brush every tooth at the gum line, as well as above and below the brackets. This will help to reach majority of the tooth’s surface and help to remove plaque and food debris. Even kids who are old enough to brush on their own may need help until they are comfortable with properly angling the toothbrush.
Cleaning Between Teeth
Flossing is another crucial step when wanting to keep your teeth healthy. Use a floss threader to make flossing with braces easier. Soft picks can also help brush very tight spaces. After brushing, you can help prevent cavities by rinsing with a mouthwash. Mouthwashes help to remove bacteria, which makes for a healthier mouth.
Taking care of teeth with braces requires diligence. Kids in braces don’t always have the discipline they need to care for their teeth, so it’s important that parents encourage and help them with tooth care. Kids should still see their dentist twice a year when they have braces on, because it will help with cleanings and checkups.
